Jazz Variations
JAZZ VARIATIONS is a new series of works in glass by Brigitte Wolf.
This series was started in the spring of 2002.
A desire for more spontaneity in creating with glass led to a more free form design using a liquid resist on flashed glass. These glass elements inspired a playful approach to composition. I mixed and matched colours and shapes and generally had a lot of fun with this. Each piece is unique, made without a pattern. Techniques used include sandblasting and glass painting.
This spontaneous and random approach reminded me of the improvisations of JAZZ, suggesting just the right balance of looseness and structure. Moreover, the painting of the resist was accomplished while listening to some of my favorite recordings by Louis Armstrong, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, and Harry Manx, among others.
