LEWIS CHESS SERIES For years I have been fascinated by the Lewis Chess Pieces. Carved from walrus ivory in the 12th century, these beautiful gaming pieces were buried on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and found again in 1831. Exquisitely carved, there were several sets of pieces and many of them are now on view at both the British Museum in London and the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. After looking at pictures of the pieces, I finally found the inspiration to create a series of panels inspired by them. All pieces are painted and leaded.
